An orange tabby, often referred to as ‘Chiko’ by a certain idiot, peered through a pair of green slit eyes and slowly raised its head. Crouching a few steps down was Kouta Sakauchi, blinking innocently back at the tired feline. He had cat kibble sitting in the center of his palm, and it appeared that he was attempting to lure the tabby in by shaking it gently in its direction.
“Nyah?” he offered again with that wide grin of his, and tried taking a few steps up. “Does Chiko want some yumyum?”
The cat’s shoulders rose and fell as it gave Kouta a short huff in response. It slowly planted its paws against the ground and stood up in a languid manner, triggering Kouta’s eyes to perk. A small hope began to rise within the teenage boy’s chest.
Seeing the brunette get all excited, the cat paused to stare blankly at Kouta again, his eyelids slowly drooping and lifting. Before Kouta could even interpret his groggy look as permission to enter the kitty’s personal bubble, however, Chiko turned in its spot and plopped back onto the ground, positioning himself so that his rear and slowly swaying tail was now facing Kouta. A clear rejection.
“Ahh…,” Kouta uttered, the corners of his lips slowly curling downwards. He sighed. “Looks like Chiko is in a grumpy mood today too, eh?” The tabby glanced over its small shoulder. Its nostrils flared when Kouta proceeded to climb up the stairs. It was starting to get tense as its territory was slowly being invaded. It started to stand, its back hunched and its fangs visible.
Seeing the kitty’s defensive stance, Kouta paused and held up his hands. “Ah, I’m not gonna bother you or anything. I just wanted to leave you the kibble in case you still wanted some.”
Chiko hissed.
Kouta blinked, taking a moment to interpret the situation. “…Kibble?” he tried again, bringing his cupped palm a bit closer to the kitty.
Chiko hissed some more.
Kouta withdrew his extended arm. “No kibble?”
Chiko let out a low, warning grumble.
Kouta balled his open hand into a fist. A dejected sigh. “Hm… maybe it’d be better if I bring sardines next time.”
He locked his hands behind his back and leaned a bit towards the cat. “Wouldja like some sardinies instead, Chi-neko-chan?” He pouted when Chiko only glowered at him in response. He got down into a crouching position once again and propped his head against his balled fists. “Chi-neko-chan, what should I do to make you like me?”
He shifted his gaze skyward and found the strips of orange torii standing firm in the overhead. Well, he was at a shrine after all. Why not pray about it? Though. Were people even allowed to pray about something trivial as getting along with a little grouchy kitten? Kouta began to sway back and forth on his heels and toes as he thought about it. Hm. Perhaps he should consider praying first about eternal happiness or world peace. Or something like that. Then maybe consider bringing up the kitten issue—
“Uwoh!” Kouta blinked when, upon leaning backwards, he felt the forces of gravity working on him. “Ack!” a yelp came from his lips, as Kouta found himself rolling backwards down the steep steps that led up to the shrine.
Luckily he hadn’t even been that far up. It was only a few seconds later until he had his back against the ground.
Kouta sighed, then stared straight ahead, expecting to see the warm, blue sky, but instead, finding a person hovering above him. The sun beamed brightly in the background, making it hard to identify the individual.
“Ah….” Kouta blinked in surprise. He gave the air a sniff and craned his head up a bit. The kitty kibble he had brought as an offering to Chiko earlier was now scattered everywhere—from the steps, to the ground, to even Kouta’s shirt.
The brunette gently placed his head back onto the ground to give the new arrival another look. His back and butt kinda hurt. He lifted his hand slightly in the air and gave a friendly little wave. “Hi there,” he said cheerfully, as if he hadn't just made a clumsy fall down the stairs. TAGGED: Open to anyones! i run my fingers cross windows to trace all the outlines that make up your face.haven't found all that i'm looking for The area was only familiar from when she was a child, when her parents would lead her up those steps with both clutching either of her small hands. They would sit and enjoy something under the sunshine, either a meal or just some time together after a long week. It wasn’t very clear to her, having been there only on occasion, but she could faintly recall the steps and the picnic blankets. The sun shimmered behind faces, so she couldn’t clearly tell who was who, but it made her grin regardless. A good dose of nostalgia had swept upon her and she greeted it without question, striding forward through the sweeter memories.
“Jun, watch where you’re going, those are long stairs!” Came the noise of a motherly coo, the one that she had emulated as a child, and continued to now. “It’ll really hurt if you fall down.” Shutting her eyes to commotion of her memories, she trailed on ahead without watching where she was stepping. Nothing much was in her way, the grassy knoll surprisingly deserted for a sunny Saturday afternoon. Above her the blue sky shimmered with a dust of clouds, the breeze shook the grass. It was sublime.
In front of the stairs she stopped, her eyelids curling up to reveal her eyes, which curiously took in the sights before her. In her head, her mother was chastising her for irritating the cat of the shrine, an earlier scene that she had forgotten about other than the scar on her hand. It was quite a reflection of what was going on at the moment, the younger male quite clearly making an attempt to get the cat to play with him. Though she couldn’t visualize much at this angle, only his back and the flickering tail of the pumpkin tabby, making her curious as to what was really going on.
As he crouched, she made a step closer to the steps in wonder if she should say something about her presence as to not seem like a creep—she knew how it felt to have one of those walking around you—but paused. Maybe if she just turned around now… though she had already come this far, oh well. “Hel—” He went down, tumbled down those steps and she stood in a sheer uncertainty, not knowing if she should attempt to stop him or just watch. And the latter it was made to be, following him with her eyes as he tumbled to a halt at her feet, dazed and staring up. Immediately she bent at the waist, moving her hand down to touch at his face.
“O-oh, are you okay?” her voice caught up with her finally, and she paused another moment before laughing. “You fall down these stairs and all you say is hi? Are you hurt?” Despite her good humored approach, her face was wrinkled with an obvious, motherly concerned. “Though, really, that is what you get for bothering that cat. Karma.” Another laugh fell out here, clearly amused by her own antics. Taking after her mother, yet again.

L O O K . A T . M E . L I K E . . .
Eighteen year old Kairi Kasugazaki let out a yawn as she lethargically slid her right shoe on. She stood up slowly and tapped the front of her right foot against the ground. "Hm." she rubbed her eye thoughtfully then stared down at her messenger bag, wondering if she had forgotten anything. Laptop, wallet, cellphone, pens, water bottle, etc. ... Yup.
Kairi wondered for a moment if she'd need an umbrella. She blinked at the exit of the house. It was a sunny day at the moment. but she really was too lazy to check the broadcast to see if it would start raining later. Whatever.
"Going out, Kairi-chan?" the brunette blinked at her aunt's voice but didn't bother to even glance over her shoulder.
"From the looks of things." the eighteen year old replied ever so sarcastically yet nonchalantly, "Are you about to ask me when I'll be back?"
"Well, I am your aunt, Kairi-chan, so it's only natural that I'll-" Kairi heaved a sigh and closed her sleepy eyes, "And I do have a Father. He can worry about me in your place, I think."
"Kairi-chan-" the eighteen year old lazily waved her free hand in the air as she opened the door.
Strolling down the streets with her messenger bag bouncing against her thigh with each step she took, the brunette's neck cranked and her amber eyes slid up to the wide open sky. "If you give me even one drop of rain," Kairi said to the sky - or rather, whatever god was up there - with a blink of her eyes, her nose still hoisted up in the air, "I'll go and hack into them church files and ruin everything there is that concerns you and your disciples." she mumbled as if threatening the almighty lord.
Kairi blinked and her vision robotically slid back down to her eye level. She looked forward and down for a moment when she noticed that someone's gaze was fixated on her being. She saw a small girl, a neighbour probably, staring at her and she stared back for a second or two before losing interest. She went on and walked past the girl but only to stop in her tracks when the toddler spoke suddenly, "Kairi-oneechan's a bad person!"
Kairi slowly glanced over her shoulder to see the little girl pointing an accusing finger at her, "Un." the brunette gave a lazy grunt of sorts as a reply.
"You were being mean to kami-sama!" the girl added with a frown and clenched fists.
"And next I'll be asking him to thunderstrike you into a pile of ashes." Kairi retorted and the girl's mouth turned into an O-shape. Kairi blinked and looked back to the front with a shrug, "Ah. But hopefully he can do that without making it rain, or I'd have to keep my promise and hack into the church's computer files which would ultimately lead to his own ruin."
There was a period of silence before the toddler hurriedly peddled away on her tricycle and zoomed back towards her house, "Maamaaa! Kairi-oneechan was bullying meee!"
"Ah. Boo hoo."
Continuing down the streets, Kairi eventually arrived upon the familiar shrine she used to visit as a child. Mainly because her aunt would bring her here. But truth be told, Kairi didn't believe in the existence of god. She may claim that she could see spirits or speak to the dead, sure, though none of it was true. She could say all she wanted and people could believe whatever they chose to because, in the end, words were merely words.
Kairi's pair of amber orbs blinked upon noticing figures and movements near the stairs. She stared at an individual she was familiar with before her eyes further moved to the female next to him. "Hm." she blinked and her head tilted slightly. Her body turned to the pair in a somewhat robotic mannerism though she remained where she was.
"A fool and his seductress." the eighteen year old commented out loud though she was really talking to herself rather than speaking with either Kouta or Jun. She continued to stare at the two with slight interest, somewhat curious as to what they were doing. Although it was obvious that she held no concern towards the fact that Kouta seemed to have fallen down the stairs moments before her arrival.

Kouta smiled when the stranger he had just bumped into began to laugh. From the sound of the figure’s soothing, mellow voice, Kouta could safely say that it was a woman. “Aha. Well, if not a ‘hi,’ then what else?” Though he supposed a ‘hey’, ‘hello’, ‘how are you,’ could work just as well for a friendly greeting.
Kouta arched his back as he made an attempt at sitting up, “I’m fine! Though my back and my head kinda hurt.” So did his butt, but he figured saying that out loud would be a tad bit awkward.
He extended his arms in front of him, reaching for the stairs as he willed his rear to rock him back to his feet. It didn’t work. He found himself landing on his back again. “Ouch.” He stared up at the blue sky and sighed. “Ahh. I’m like an awkward turtle.” He tried again, pulling himself upward, then finally picking himself up off the ground. “Whew, that took a while.” He dusted himself off, then turned around and offered the stranger a proud smile, as if he considered the act of simply standing up after a great fall to be a big accomplishment.
“Pwaha. Hey, I wasn’t trying to bother the cat!” Kouta donned a fake pout on his face as he pointed up the stairs, where the cat still sat, peering down at the conversing humans. “Chi-neko-chan and I are friends.” The brunette swiveled on his foot and looked up at the cat for a confirmation. “Ne? Chi-neko-chan?”
The cat simply stared down at him with narrowed eyes, displeased that he was being shown attention from the simple idiot once again. It let out something that sounded like a kitty growl, but of course, the ever cheerful Kouta chose to interpret it differently. “See? It purred a little ‘yes’ for me.”
Chiko growled again and this time, Kouta heard it well. “Aha. Well… I guess he’s not in a good mood right now.” Kouta let out a small laugh as he turned back to face the lady stranger and scratched the back of his head. “He’s a grumpy Mr. Neko.”
"A fool and his seductress."
Kouta blinked when he heard a familiar voice sounding not too far from where he stood. “Ah,” he peered beyond the lady stranger with whom he was conversing and saw that it was none other than his childhood friend, Kairi. “It’s Kairiri-kun!”
His smile began to fade away into a confused frown however when he recalled her words. He stared at the lady stranger in front of him once again and blinked. “Seductress? You were seducing me?” He raised a single finger and pressed it thoughtfully against his bottom lip. “Hum. This is rather awkward. I’m not sure what to do in this type of situation.” He stared blankly at the ground for a few seconds, seemingly contemplating what to do next, but suddenly shook his head mid-daze.
“Ah, introductions!” he suddenly uttered, remembering his manners. He extended his arm in Kairi’s direction. “This is Kasugazaki Kairi. She’s a good friend of mine.” He retrieved that same hand and placed it on his chest. “I’m Sakauchi Kouta, it’s nice to meet you.”

i run my fingers cross windows to trace all the outlines that make up your face.haven't found all that i'm looking for “I guess it wasn’t too bad of a fall, then. Didn’t break anything or…?” she tilted her head lightly, assured by his light and lively tone. He seemed quite alive and not so very injured, which made her sigh just a bit in relief. There was nothing she liked more than seeing people healthy and enjoying themselves, and it seemed that Kouta took that bill quite well. It would’ve been expected after such a fall one would be slightly less smiley and a little whineier, but the boy took it like a champ and just moved on with life. It was nice to be in contact with such a normal person; actually, it even made her smile inch a little wider.
And there is stayed, her head moving slightly to the side as she watched him move about and speak. She didn’t offer much more than a nod of her head or a concerned tilt of her lips to anything that he did, finding that no matter how she moved to help him it seemed he had it done before she could do anything. It didn’t worry her so much, really, just made her twitch her lips with enjoyment. As she shifted her weight from one foot to the other, she nodded again and spoke. “Good job. I’m glad you’re not hurt, though that looked like quite the tumble. I’m sorry,” she pressed her lips together slightly at this. “I should’ve tried to help stop you… oh well, it seems like you’re quite fine.” A quiet chuckle passed her lips, relaxing them into another smile as she continued to observe.
Taking a few steps forward, she saw the tabby and observed its discontented face with a fondness from her own memories. Oh, how her childhood self very much enjoyed pulling tails. “Well, it seems like your friend isn’t feeling very friendly at all.” Honestly, she almost wanted to go up and pet the cat herself, seeing what a cute face it was making now. But, at least in maturing, she understood to never agitate an on edge animal. Never ended well for either party, really. “Leave the grumpy cat be, you don’t want to end up with scratches, do you?” For a moment her eyes were drawn to the scars lining the side of her hand before straying upwards again, lips curl up to reveal another grin.
Her smile, however, ran a bit low and became more leveled at the comment from the girl who seemed to appear out of thin air, her words made for the speaker’s ears hitting Jun. A laugh fell from her lips immediately after a second to register the comment, shaking her head at Kouta’s question without thinking much on it. “No, I wasn’t. Sorry to disappoint.” Shifting her eyes from Kairi to Kouta for a second, she bowed shortly in a greeting to each of them. “It’s a pleasure to meet both of you. Good friends, hm? Nothing more?” A teasing air coated her voice for just a moment before waving off the idea with another chuckle. “My name is Jun… Minami, Jun. Again, good to meet you.” Pausing for a moment to glance between them, she opened her mouth to speak once more, “What brings either of you here?”

L O O K . A T . M E . L I K E . . .
"Hm." Kairi blinked from Kouta to Jun, her eyebrow raised at the small back and forth clarification between the two. "Pinky the Naive." she commented dryly on how easily deceived her childhood friend was. But then again, hadn't Kouta always been this innocent?
Strange how anyone could remain that way for seventeen years, especially when he attended a military school. Physical labour was probably one of the few things Kouta was good at, though. Kairi's shoulders rolled as if giving a light shrug to herself, her attention caught once more when being introduced to the stranger.
Her amber eyes lazily slid to Kouta as her head too robotically turned to him, "Ah, how kind of you. Though I don't recall asking you to do my introduction for me." she looked to Jun and blinked, eyeing the young woman up and down slowly, as if silently scoring her on her outward appearance, "And we'd both be dead by now if she were an assassin sent to eliminate us, 'cause somebody - cough, Kouta, cough - thought it'd be a good idea to give her our real names."
Yawning, Kairi rubbed her left eye for a moment as Jun's tone suddenly became more playful, "He's just shy." the eighteen year old said dryly in response to the teasing. "You should see him in bed some time. He's a natural. Although he's into men 99% of the time."
Which was obviously not true since she had been nothing more than friends with Kouta for as long as she could remember. Though Kairi was famous for being a liar amongst all those that knew her. So long as somebody had the delicious reactions she wanted to see, she would keep lying and lying till she grew bored of them. Funny how she hadn't gotten tired of her few friends, though. Perhaps there was still some form of compassion under that thick, unintentional, layer of apathy. Besides, nothing spelled fun like a couple of harmless, fabricated stories.
Her head tilted and Kairi looked to Kouta with a blink, not expecting him to understand the exact meaning of her vague remark. He was always too simple-minded for his own good. Kairi definitely looked forward to the day when her best friend fell in love. Maybe he'd even come to her for advise on what to do with his girlfriend. She just might tell him that he was supposed to wear those condoms on his pinkies, just for the heck of it.
"What brings either of you here?"
"Just out on a patrol," Kairi said, turning to Jun, "Kami-sama would be mad at me if his favourite Goddess of Chaos slacks off." she gave a nonchalant shrug, "And yourselves?" she offered as if she was really up for a small chitchat, "Besides falling-" her vision slid to Kouta briefly before returning to the young woman, "-and watching someone fall down the stairs, of course."

} - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kouta let out a sigh of relief hearing that the lady stranger, who he now knew as Jun, was not out to seduce him. Though… now he was confused as to where Kairi had gotten that kind of notion....
He shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it too much and move on. Kouta was never the type to question what he had been told. It was a part of his simplistic and even obedient nature, one which helped to make him a good soldier, but also one which led him to be easily tricked by someone as manipulative as Kairi.
“Minami Jun-san,” Kouta repeated, as if testing out the name on his own tongue. “Jun. That’s a cute name!” Short and sweet, and a smooth sound to it. His own two-syllable name, on the other hand, always sounded very staccato. Kou-ta. Kou-ta. Hum.
"Ah, how kind of you. Though I don't recall asking you to do my introduction for me."
Kouta turned to Kairi, all smiles, until the last bit. “Ah, whoops,” Kouta uttered, pressing his fingers against his lips, feeling sorry for having done so, despite her nonchalant tone.
His eyes widened when Kairi continued to suggest a worst case scenario—if Jun happened to be an assassin out to “eliminate” them. And Kouta just happened to give her their full names.“Eh…,” Kouta blinked, letting the possibility of it all slowly sink in, “Eh?!” He gave a little jump before turning to face Jun. “But… you don’t look like an assassin….” She didn’t look like anyone suspicious actually. And so far, she seemed to be very nice. Maybe, a cleverly disguised assassin? Kouta scratched his head and stared at the ground. But why the heck would an assassin be out to get someone like Kouta and Kairi?
Hearing Jun—the assassin?—question his relationship with Kairi, Kouta looked up. Something more? Well, he supposed that more than just a ‘good friend,’ he considered Kairi to be one of his best. They’ve been together ever since they were little kids. If anyone, aside from his own mother, knew him best, it would probably be Kairi.
Before he could respond, however, Kairi took charge. “I…,” Kouta blinked when Kairi labeled him as shy, “I am?” Hum. And he had always viewed himself as the outgoing type. “’In bed’?” he repeated after Kairi, his mind spinning into a spiral of confusion. Why would she suggest that Jun see him in bed? “Uh… I guess I’m a… natural sleeper,” though why would that matter? “Wait. Wha--? Eh? Guys?” His eyes darted to Jun and he gave her a big shrug—shoulders raised, arms up high and bent at the elbows. He didn’t get it, so, he’d give up.
“Ah…,” he smiled when Kairi referred to herself as the ‘Goddess of Chaos’—finally, something he understood. “Ha ha, she says that but she’s just joking,” Kouta clarified for Jun.
He laughed when Kairi mentioned his clumsy fall. “Ha ha well... I actually ended up following Chiko,” he motioned to the kitty behind him, “here. I even had some kitty kibble to give him too.”
He blinked, then looked to the ground. “Ah, speaking of which, I dropped ‘em on the ground.” He lifted his gaze and scanned the premise. The orange tori standing noble and tall in the overhead and the shrine that sat at the end of the steps. “Err… maybe I should pick them up.” It seemed wrong just to leave them scattered in a place many considered sacred. Even if it was just the stairs. He crouched down and starting plucking them off the ground, one by one.
